i work an eight hour shift and the dog has reighn of the house, she doesn’t do anything bad except poo in the back room, i tried shutting her in the bathroom and the laundry room and she tears the doors up. there is no one to let her out during the day and i was wanting to keep her in a pet carrier while i was at work, my girlfriend says it is too long for her to be in the carrier, i would like some input about appropiate time for a dog to be in the carrier

8 hours is too long for a dog to be left alone. And, it’s too long to be left in a carrier on a daily basis.
Sounds like a dog walker needs to be brought in to help this dog’s situation. Or better yet, doggie day care.

Can she stand up in the carrier? If not, no more than 20 minutes.
You can get a crate (large dog carrier) that is large enough for her to get up, turn around in and lay down, which is feasable. But a small carrier? No.
Have you tried pet gates?
Well when my puppy was 1 month wen we got him we kept him in a kennel whenever he pooped or pee’ed or did anything naughty in the house. But we got him a real big one. or if i were you maybe gt a metal fencing cage and put it outside or in the basement? Thats what my friends do but they live on a farm.
3 hours….tops. This is from a dog trainer that I heard talking on TV. Some will say that they can go longer but imagine yourself in a crate for longer than 3 hours. You might go a bit batty. I, myself, would prefer to not go over an hour, but that is just me. Sounds like your dog might have separation anxiety and is bored while you are gone. I recommend trying the rooms again but with some kong toys with treats in them. Give her something to do while you are away besides ripping at the doors. Good luck.
Four hours is about the maximum a dog should be kept in a carrier. Past that, she needs bathroom breaks, food, water, and some room to stretch. If you leave her in there for 8 hours, she’ll be absolutely miserable, and probably involuntarily urinate in her crate, because she has no other option.
You need to get a doggie door or a dog walker. She wouldn’t go in the house except that she has no other option. Dogs simply can’t hold it for eight hours; heck, neither can most people. That’s your problem. You don’t need a carrier or any barriers, you need a way for your dog to go to the bathroom while you’re gone.
If that’s all she does is poo in the backroom try putting some newspapers down. Or crate her in a crate that is big enough.
The answer is,how long would you like to be in a pet carrier? The carrier is made to transport animals, not live in them.If you leave the cage open and it used for their house, that’s fine but don’t lock them up for 8 hrs.I guess the answer is don’t have a pet, especially a dog, if you are working all day. It’s not fair to the animal.
As a general rule for puppies, they can “hold it” for 1 hour per month old they are. As far as adult dogs…. My dogs are crated when no one is home and overnight (except one dog. she’s trustworthy and has free run of the house at all times). I leave the house at 7:30 and don’t get home sometimes until 4. That’s 7 1/2 hours. Everything is fine.
As long as your dog has a chance to both urinate AND deficate before being put in the crate/carrier, she should be able to make it that long. What is your girlfriend’s schedule like? She can’t let her out? What about a neighbor? You can also try asking at your vet’s office if any of the employees do pet sitting. Where I work, several of us will let a client’s dog outside if they can’t do it.
