New Pug Puppy…. new opinions and helpful hints on how to raise her?
Question by Savannah35AZ: New Pug Puppy…. new opinions and helpful hints on how to raise her?
On Friday I just bought my First Pug puppy. My hubby and I already have a Boxer mix named Dasiey who is 10 months and has adapted well to this new baby.
Sally is our new little girl’s name. We are planning to get a BOY Pug in one month and name him Jack as in “Jack and Sally” from “Nightmare before Xmas”- cute huh?
Anyhow, she is amazing! She is a runt. She just turned 7 weeks today and weighs about 1 1/2 Ilbs. She is very playful, loving and honory. My hubby and I took Sally shopping yesteday and bought her two beds, collar w/ tag, a pet carrier, soft chewing toys, food and water dish, a blanket and food/milk.
At first we bought some milk in a can & also powder milk for the last week of weening her. Apparently she has been eating dry food also and so we just went and bought her the Brand ‘Eukanuba” for babies. This stuff is expensive but I hear is very good/popular. Her bowels are good and she even lets us know when she has to go #1 and #2.
Okay let me get to my questions here since all I have done is brag about my new pride and joy.
Has anyone heard of the brand “Eukanuba” and do their dogs like it? What kind of food does your pug like? What size is normal for this kind of breed?
Any helpful tips on raising pugs besides giving them lots of love, brushing them to help with shedding and cleaning their folds on their face?
She is truly an angel and that is why we are planning to get a baby boy soon.
OH Most importantly, we are getting her shots and a check up in a week. We planned on a insurance plan for both pugs including our dear Dasiey (Boxer) …
We love and cherish all of our animals & want the best fo them individually.
Please all you pug parents out there share your stories and helpful parenting skills with me??
Thanks….
Hopefully I do this right—

On 5/30/06 was her first visit to the Vet. She got her worms pills (just in case) and her first shots. She was such a good little girl. She goes back in about 3 weeks for so more of her routine shots. Overall, the doc said she is a very healthy, happy baby! I am so proud of my girl!!!

at seven weeks she should be eating dry food. continue her on what the breeders had her one. getting her fixed and microchiped would be best!!! go to your vet to have her checked out and make sure she is completely healthy, than ask about the spaying and a microchip. Other than that, give her lots of love and attention. you sound like you will be wonderful parents. you might want to look into adopting a male, instead of buying another one. there are lots of pugs looking for good homes! try http://www.petfinder.com
pugs are great fun…but please adopt your second one…i’m sure there is a pug breed rescue in your area…eukanuba is really not all it is cracked up to be…read the ingredients list…you will likely see chicken or meat by-products….for the readily available brands (say ones you can purchase at petsmart) i recommend royal canin.
A great resource for you would be pugs.com! There you can get all sorts of good pug info and chat with other Pugsters. I have a 1 1/2 year old Pug who’s black, fixed and female. She’s got 2 cats and a lab mix for friends. She loves to go to the park and visit with all the people and pets, but it’s necessary to watch the temperature as the lack of a nose means she can easily overheat in summer or get too cold in winter. This is the biggest Pug issue, I think. Second would be the fact they love to wander…gotta go check out everything and then they’re lost! A microchip is a swell idea. And they can’t swim a lick…just sink like bowling balls, so watch her around pools and ponds. My Pug seems to have an aversion to these, so we’re pretty safe on that score…. Lastly, they are little love buckets and do best when they can spend a maximum amount of time with you or their buds. Enjoy!
jo here.my brother has 3 of the little darlings and he says they are very head smart so they pick up bad habits real quick so they will run your house quick if you dont stop any behaviour you dont straight away and that they are prone to dehydration so heaps of water wherever they are when its warm. anyway hope that helps xx
Pugs are my favorite dogs. They do have some unique needs. You should know that the Pug’s cooling system is limited due to its flat face and the dog can easily overheat. Similarly, they dislike the cold and are prone to catching colds. As far as training goes, there is a book on the secrets of training pugs. Its at http://www.pugtraining.tk
Sounds like you are doing all the right things.. My vet recommended Science Diet -also expensive- Our last pug died of cancer last year so we just got a new baby girl pug AZHA pronounced ASIA. They are a hand full. She is now 9 weeks old and is so funny to watch. I love the pictures you attached!! See mine..

Your puppy is adorable. My boyfriend has a pug that is 7 and he is the sweetest thing. He loves to snuggle and he has a very calm demeanor. Good luck and have fun!
