Q&A: what are some tips on traveling 500 miles with a cat in the car?
Question by mommy to Dayton & Anthony: what are some tips on traveling 500 miles with a cat in the car?
we are leaving to Iowa South Dakota border and i am taking my kitten he likes to be in the car but we are not taking a pet carrier
I understand the concern about my not useing a carrier, however, this trip is associated with my husbands work and we will not have the money to get a carrier until we get there. We had planned to get one but his work pulled out and went to Iowa 3 weeks early, we only had 2 days notice.

I always keep a litterbox and water available when I travel with my cat, even on short trips. And, I “walk” her on a kitty leash at rest areas too.
Give your answer to this question below!
Bring a litter box, a good supply of kitty litter, and a box of nose plugs.
don’t let the cat drive.
Mistake to not take a carrier. It protects the animal in case of an accident, so it won’t be a projectile. Putting them in a carrier also keeps them more calm and quiet. A good carrier is big enough for them to sit up and move a bit. My carrier is big enough for a small litter box and water and food dish.
Do all of the things that other people have said, but also put butter on the feet, this takes their mind off of the travelling. Also do this when you get to the new place and the cat will never run away.
I just traveled 2000 miles with mine in a U-Haul. Three cats in a carrier. Make sure you don’t give them too much water before you leave. Mine did not get water until we stopped at night, then I brought in their litter box, food and gave them fresh water. They did fine.
If you are only traveling 500 hundred miles I would talk to the vet in getting some pills to make your cat tired and relaxed, make sure you get a good cat carrier. And most likely your cat will not want to eat or drink. The cat will be fine till you get where you need to go. My niece traveled over 700 hundred miles. good luck.
take her to a taxidermist… you will save money on litter, and she will stay where ever you put her…
kidding! just make sure she has the litter box and on hand and roll the windows down when she is useing it, get a farret harnes and let her walk around when poss
I had a cat crawl up under my dashboard. I had another one crawl under my brake pedal. Make sure you have a litter box
and food and water for her. Be prepared for boredom on a long trip. Make sure she doesn’t get out of the car when you stop, as she could get lost, or hit by a car.
I can’t imagine you not taking a carrier, that is definatly the safest way. If you have to stop and get out of your car, your kitten could get out and you might never see him again. You could take him out for a walk (pee break) on a cat leash. That trip sould take about 7 hours, so you do need to provide water, but he can go without food for that lenth of time.
I planned a long drive last year with 3 cats, but did not go afterall. Plans included putting their carriers in the back seat with their favorite afghans/blankets. Disposable litter box on floor, food and water on the other side of the floor. Planned a call to the vet for tranquilizers just in case. So the cats would not get underfoot while I was driving I was going to get a halter and short leash so they could be free in the back, but not interfer with us up front. And the carrier would be open in case they needed to hide.
If she is used to riding in the car you probly won’t need the leash. But, it’s a sight further than she usually rides I’ll bet! So, I’d get a tranquilizer just in case. And do put down water, litter box, food for her. She may not need them, but precaution is key!! Her carrier, or even an upside down box on the seat will give her some security.
You can make that distance in one day if you share driving; but don’t force it. Rest over nite. There are lots of motels now that take pets. Call AAA (if yer a member) for a list.
Good luck! Take yer time. Sight see!! Scritch kitty for me!
