Q&A: When you take small pets as a carry on (NWA) do they weigh or examine the carrier?
Question by Lisa S: When you take small pets as a carry on (NWA) do they weigh or examine the carrier?
I am travelling home for the holidays and want to take my pugs with me. They are small so I think they can fit in 1 carrier. The airlines rule says total carrier plus pets can’t exceed 15 lbs. Are they really going to weigh it though? They’re small pugs.
NWA rules say there can be 2 in one carrier if they are the same species and breed. However, together they will weigh more than 15 lbs, which they say total weight can’t be more than 15 lbs. So I’m just wondering if they will actually weigh it or just look at them.

They might. Are you allowed 2 carriers? Or are you traveling with someone else who can put one of the carriers under the other seat?

i’ve taken my pets with me and they usually just look at the size of the dog. hope it helps!
They will only allow one dog per carrier. I believe only Uninted allowes 2 dogs, (I think my friend said she takes 2 on United) but they have to be under a certain weight, both in their own carrier and both fir under your seat. Pugs would probably be too big to go as carry on even if you only had one as they have to be able to stand up and turn around inside.
Airlines also almost always only allow one pet in the cabin in first class, 1 in business class and 1 (sometimes 2) in coach.
When I have traveled with dogs in the past yes they ahve been known to check the carrier and weigh it. If it’s not right they do turn you back. I saw someone turned back by NWA the last time I went to Vegas because their Jack Russle was too big and the carrier too small for the dog.
Check with NWA, but I think they would have to go in cargo in their own crates.
the carrier has to be approved by the airline company. i know that coastal makes some nice crates, that arent too expensive. (coastal or dockocil either one)
