Pet carrier – To bring kitten to vet in?
Question by ariesalways411: Pet carrier – To bring kitten to vet in?
We rescued a kitten two days ago and will be bringing him into the vet tomorrow. We dont have a carrier, Im not sure if we will be able to go buy one before we need it. He is about 4-5weeks old we are guessing. He is just adorable! Bringing him to the vet should we find a box or what else to put him in – Or just hold him. Im not sure about holding him the whole time if he goes potty.
would a milk crate work with blankets, ect…

Use a small box. If he’s good enough around people you could wrap him in a towel. I’m glad you’re taking him to the vet so soon!

Get a little box. Put a nice, soft blanket it in, and place the kitten in. Don’t close the box, but hold the kitten to prevent jumping out.
This way, if the kitten gets car sick, or has an immediate need to go potty, it will be in the box, and not on you.
A regular – clean – cardboard box will do. Just cut holes for air circulation and put a towel in there with a toy or two to keep him company. Eventually, as he grows, it would benefit you to invest in a nice, hard plastic carrier. Find one that can hold 10-15 lbs.
any small box will work just make sure it has breathing holes in it.
maybe you could put him in a shoebox but make sure you put little holes in the box or some people bring there cats on a leash but I would go for a shoebox
GOOD LUCK
Most likely won’t go potty.
but securing him inside a box is better because dogs are at the VET… and some are NOT friendly to cats/ kittens.
I would take a med/ small box and cut holes in it (small ones ) and put the kitten inside with a towel or blanket.
OR BORROW one!
yes find a box most vets will understand especially the first u bring them in
do not hold him.
5 weeks you should be able to hold him, but it only takes one dog bark to send him climbing on top of your head.
a box is better then nothing. poke a lot of holes in it, put newspapers or rags in it. leave open until you get to the vet, then close the top.
you could wrap him “mummy like” in a towel. just his head poking out. it restrains him. he cant run or claw. but, if you do not have experience with cats, i dont recommend it. few people understand how agile they are and how sharp the claws are.
edit – going potty is a good thing. vets always want stool samples. when they leave one in the carrier, it makes it easier.
we don’t use a box at all. i guess it depends on your cat’s personality, but mine is absolutely petrified of the cat carrier. she has a leash and harness, and i have a bag i use when i go to the vet. i put her towel in the bottom of the bag, and hook the leash to the straps. she lays in there until i PRY her out for the vet to look at her…
a box should be fine for this time. most vets only ask that your animal be secured.
A box will work fine. I would put a towel in the bottom so the lil’ one doesn’t slide around in the box. It will also smell like home.
you definitely shouldn’t just bring the kitten to the vet in your arms. there’s always an array of other cats and even big dogs in the waiting room, which will get them riled up and definitely scare your kitten, which the other animals’ owner’s, the vet, and your kitten won’t appreciate! plus, he could try to run (and would probably be successful — you can only hold a cat for so long before they squirm away). so try to find something to bring him in. if you find a box, make sure it’s big enough for him to sit up in, and cut some little holes so he can see his surroundings. not big enough for him to poke his head through or anything though. also put a towel or something soft in there, it’ll be more comfortable for him. as far as him going potty, i doubt he will. cats won’t pee just anywhere really, not like a puppy would anyway.
your best bet is to find a carrier, which you could maybe borrow from a friend, relative or neighbor who has cats. tell them you’ll bring it right back as soon as you come back from the vet, i’m sure they won’t mind. but again, if not, try to find another option other than carrying him in, for his safety and peace of mind.
well when i first got my cat i didnt have a carrier either and all i did was wrap him in a blankie and i bought a carrier at the vet, they usually have them on sale at vats offices for like $ 5, the carton ones with the handle! Oh and he wont go potty if ur carrying him, dont worry about that.
