Question by : Where does my dog have to be in his carrier in the airport?
I am flying with my new puppy for the first time tomorrow and I have never flown with a dog before. He is flying in the cabin with us and we already made his reservation and went to the vet. Like most young puppies he does not like to stay in his carrier unless he is sleeping, I know you have to keep him in there on the flight its self but what about in the airport? Do I have to keep him in there from the minute we walk into the door to check in to when we walk out the door at our final destination?

Only your airline could tell you for sure, but since most people love to see puppies, it wouldn’t surprise me if you can get away with having him out of the carrier in the waiting are as long as he’s on a leash.

You’re biggest problem is that no one is looking for a puppy in the airport. People in airports are very distracted. He could easily get stepped on! I wouldn’t take him out of the carrier unless you can find a gate area that is fairly calm.

Q&A: How do I travel with Fluffy?

Question by comfortably numb: How do I travel with Fluffy?
I am going to be going away over the spring and summer and it will be necessary to take my 6 year old cat w/ me, the car ride will be about 4-5 hours. Should I keep him in a pet carrier, or let him just sit in the passenger seat? What about him eating and going to the bathroom, can he hold it that long if he is in a carrier? Any tips are very much appreciated!

Keep him in the carrier for your safety and his. Do not feed him before traveling. Keep a litter pan in the car and if you stop for lunch/dinner for more then 1/2 hr, then let him out to stretch, use the pan and give him a small meal or drink of water.

I show cats and they are fine travelling for 4-5 hrs to a show without eating. They eat when we get to the show.

They should large enough to hold their dishes and still have room to stretch out and turn around easily.

One time when I was traveling home (CA) from New York, there was a lady behind me who was carrying her kitten on board with her. She had the kitten in a carrier that looked like a duffel bag.

Most pet stores carry carriers that you can carry with you like a duffel bag. They allow plenty of light and ventilation, and are fairly priced. Some of them come in really cute patterns too.

I would also talk to a local vet about how to keep the pet comfortable and calm while traveling, and I would also contact the airline regarding their policy on carrying small pets with you on board.
