Question by Check me out: How safe is it to fly a cat from Bangkok to Chicago on KLM?
He will be travelling from Bangkok to Amsterdam (13 hours) with an overnight stay in the Schipol pet hotel. From there he will travel from Amsterdam to Chicago (9 hours). How safe is this if he is flying on KLM in cargo? I know that KLM is one of the best airlines to use for flying pets but im concerned about the freezing temperatures at the stops and also the flight duration.

I have used KLM 4 times and never had a problem. At the hotel they are checked by a vet and if there is a problem the cat doesn’t go on. They will make sure it is healthy to fly. They pet and feed and water the animals while there. I trusted them to ship 4 cats at 4 different times. The cats that came here came out purring and snuggling.

And they are climate controlled

Question by Loretta M: Does anyone have a King Charles Cavalier with Mitral valve disease?
I plan to purchase a King Charles Cavalier puppy but have read about mitral valve disease in this breed. I have read that by 5 years old 50 to 60 percent get this disease and by 10 years old are dead. This article is by a Dr. Nelson a cardiac dog surgeon from Texas. Does anyone know or have information on this . thanks

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. His mom is currently 10 and heart clear – this is very rare, his dad is 7 and heart clear, so if luck is with me, my guy will fair pretty well.

Is MVD seriously in the breed and a problem. Absolutely. I do personally know four other owners who are dealing with MVD, one in a Cavalier that is three. The best way to avoid it if you really want a Cavalier is to purchase from a breeder who is following protocol and waiting to breed until her dogs are older and heart clear. Unfortunately there is no genetic test for MVD.

Cavalier Health Org has some really clear information on what breeders should be doing – what you should ask.

This first is about MVD in the breed,

http://www.cavalierhealth.org/mitral_valve_disease.htm

This next is about Cavalier health overall,

http://www.cavalierhealth.org/

Please be aware there is another painful neuro-spinal condition that is prevalent (but mostly asymptomatic) in the breed called Syringomyelia (CM/SM). 4% of Cavaliers are euthanized because of it. Estimates look like 70% are carriers. As of this spring breeders are REQUIRED by protocol to breed only if one in the pair has been MRId and graded “A”.

Please do not accept a breeder’s word that their lines are clear of MVD and SM. There are no lines clear. Geneticists have studied this thoroughly.

Keep in mind that most every toy breed has a fairly high rate of MVD, but no where near what we see in the Cavalier.

I could not any more highly recommend a breed for temperament. They are absolutely wonderful dogs.

Q&A: When should I get a puppy?

Question by Turtle: When should I get a puppy?
We are currently in a townhouse and will be moving in the next 4-5 months into a new home which is being built now. If we get a puppy before the move, it will be about 3-6 weeks before. I am worried about “accidents” in the new home, but am also worried about moving the puppy to 3 different homes in a matter of weeks. I need your opinions please! FYI-the puppy will most likely be a Lab or Golden Retriever. Thanks!

Puppies need a stable place to attack themselves to at first. I have a golden retreiver, and we bought him at 6 weeks old. He had a little trouble getting used to the new house. If your worried about accidents, keep the puppy in an un-carpeted area w/ baby gates to keep it there until it’s potty trained.

Question by ElCapitain: How can i make my cats more comfortable on a long car journey?
Hi, next month i will be moving house a long way away. This will involve a 12 hour car journey and im worried about how my 2 cats will take such a journey. I have taken one of my cats to the vets before and all the way she did a really weird meow, kind of like she was in distress. When we went to pick her up a few days later i sat her in the cage on my lap and she peed all over me (it was disgusting, almost threw up) and did the same meow, so she must have been scared. That was only a 15 min drive, how is she gonna cope with a 12 hour drive? I was thinking about sedatives but as they are both getting on in age (about 12 years old) i am worried it will be bad for them. Im not sure what to do, can anyone please help me? Thank you.
They wont be in the trunk coz my 2 dogs will be in there. They will be on the back seat and have plenty of room. But as i said one of them was really distressed when she went to the vet and she was on my lap so there was plenty of room for her.
Our car has a big trunk and the dogs go in it every time we take them for a walk to the park so dont worry, its plenty big and we will be making regular stops to let the dogs out. THank you for all your suggestions.

The vet may have to give them something to mellow them out…
