Question by Jeremiah M: What is the best airline to fly with a cat?
I’m flying from NYC to LAX in early June. I’m moving so I will be bringing my cat with me. Does anyone have any favorite airlines for pet travel? My cat is very affectionate and sweet but makes a lot of noise when he’s in the carrier. Any tips?

My cat has flown northwest several times, which is now delta, and we never had any problems. You just have to take the cat out of the carrier so they can check the carrier, and we carried her through the metal detector, then put her back in the carrier. The carrier has to be able to fit under the seat, they didn’t really care if we held the carrier in our lap, so she could see us and be reassured. Although every flight may be different.

Question by Lisa S: When taking small pets as carry on … do they weigh or examine carrier? Want to try to bring 2 pugs on board?
I am travelling home for the holidays and want to take my pugs with me. They are small so I think they can fit in 1 carrier. The airlines rule says total carrier plus pets can’t exceed 15 lbs. Are they really going to weigh it though? They’re small pugs.

Question by jit bag: Pet carrier question?
I’m traveling on a plane (in-cabin) with kitty for the 1st time.. and her carrier is an inch higher than the airline specs. Is this OK? I don’t want to spend another $ 70 on a new carrier. It’s one of those fabric ones, and since she sleeps on top of it sometimes, it’s decreased in size. The carrier has to be placed under the seat in front of me, but I think there will be enough room. I want to be sure so I can avoid any problems. Tell me from your own experience???
By the way, I’m flying with American Airlines.

Hi there…so long as the carrier CAN fit under the seat the airline will not make you purchase one of their pet carriers. We found that soft-sided carriers are not a problem, but it is truly up to the airline individually. Consider ringing customer service and ask them what would be acceptable to avoid any delays or missing your flight when you check in at the counter.
